The Rueda group does social activities together and if you are new to the area, being in a Rueda class and participating in these get togethers is a great way to meet new people. There are photos from some of Danceintime's activities on this page. They include birthday celebrations of various members, groups taking trips to dance out of town together, and parties before or after special performances, etc.
For example, you can see one photo is of a couple that got to know each other in the Rueda class and married. Literally, the Rueda class was mentioned a few times in the actual wedding ceremony and they danced in the ceremony and the groom sang to his bride as well! A photo from the wedding which some of the class members attended is shown on this page! Along with weddings, we have celebrated graduations and birthdays together and have pictures here to show for it! There were also times groups from the class went out to get something to eat after class and there are photos of that as well.
For those who want to join others in going to classes and clubs, check out
the Salsa meetup groups in your area. I (Barb) run a Baltimore Salsa Rueda Meetup group and I try to make sure everyone gets to know everyone else.
That way when the group goes to an event, there are friends to sit with and
dance with. You can join by visiting: Salsa.meetup.com/163/ and following
the prompts. Membership is free and then you find out about events where
the group is going together. There is also a DC Meetup and other related
groups. (These are great for newcomers.)
Our Danceintime group has also done some collaborating with out of town groups, and have attended Congresses in Miami. There is a photo of some DanceInTime students/teachers eating at a restaurant in Miami as they took a break from the Congress activities down there. In addition, there is a photo of a party in NYC with teachers and students from groups in Richmond and Manhattan. Several groups got together to do a step exchange in the afternoon and party at night up in NY.
Then there is the spirit of fun generated in class---we have had flan brought in to celebrate Cinco de Mayo, note the student (Jorge) dressed in a clown suit, etc. (I was driving to class behind Jorge and his car also has some mechanism to blow bubbles out of the back, plus it's painted really wildly. As I drove behind the car, I was wondering who the heck was in the car and whether he/she was coming to my class!)
Another thing that the group does frequently is go to clubs together. Sometimes teachers from Danceintime are teaching at the club. But in any case, people share ideas in class on where they are planning to dance that week. Students meet up at the clubs that they discussed! When you join the Rueda class, you get to know a group of dancers and can join them in various activities. Even if you don't take any classes, you can request to be put on our email list to get announcements for any party or events that we do as well as information on Salsa events around town. And speaking of "meeting up," there are specific groups that dancers can join that also do activities together in big numbers. These are called meetup groups. You can get information on the Salsa Meetup Group and the Rueda Meetup Group in our area by becoming a member of these groups. Just go to Salsa.meetup.com and follow the instructions for joining.
Check out Salsa.meetup.com/163 for events in the Baltimore and surrounding
areas, too.
The photos on this page are of social type gatherings and activities that took place in class or stemmed from the connections made in the classes. If it looks like fun, you are right---it IS fun to dance and hang out with friends from class!!
